Demographic Characteristics of Itbayat
The Barangays -

Nearly one out of three Itbayatans or 29% of the population live in the town proper of Santa Rosa (Kaynatuan).

Median Age -

In 1995, the median age in Itbayat was 18.7 years. Because of a higher life expectancy, the median age of Itbayat women was greater than that of Itbayat men by 1.5 years, 19.6 years and 18.1 years, respectively.

Age Structure -

While the median age shows the aging of the population, a more
detailed picture may be obtained by looking at age groups. A useful breakdown distinguishes between persons aged under 15 (children), those 15-64 (working age population) and those 65 and over (elderly).

In 1995, children accounted for 44.7% of the total population of Itbayat compared to 37.8 for Batanes. Working age population accounted for 48.2% while the proportion of persons aged 65 and over was 7.1%.
A greater proportion of women than of men were aged 65 and over, 8.4% and 6%, respectively.

The major difference between the figures for men and women in this age group was primarily because of higher male mortality.

Dependency Ratio -

The various dependency ratios (for children, for the aged, and the total ratio) also serve as useful indicators since they provide information on the economic burden that is borne by the adult population.
Itbayat's total dependency ratio (ratio of the sum of those aged 0-14 and those 65 and over to those 15-64) was 107.6% in 1995. A breakdown of the total dependency ratio shows that the child dependency ratio was 92.8% and the elderly was 14.8%.

Sex Ratio -

In 1995, Itbayat's sex ratio (number of males per 100 females) was 114.6% compared to 102.6 for Batanes. On the masculinity ratio of the elderly, Itbayat has 81% compared to 79% for Batanes.

Marital Status -

In 1995, the proportion of single people was 46% of the population. The percentage of married people and widowed persons was 47.4% and 5%, respectively. As of the 1995 Census, there were two separated/divorced people in Itbayat.
