| The Municipality of Mahatao |
| Mahatao lies in the central part of Batan Island. It covers an approximate land area of 1,300 hectares or 13 square kilometres. Around 2,000 people live in the municipality, which is bounded by Basco on the north, Ivana and Uyugan on the south, Madi Bay/Philippine Sea/Pacific Ocean on the east and Mahatao Bay/China Sea on the west. Mahatao was originally named San Carlos de Mahatao on November 4, 1798 by then Assistant Governor Don Miguel del Amo in honour of the town's patron saint, San Carlos de Borromeo. The town is six kilometres from Basco, the provincial capital. The town is rich in natural tourist attractions. It also has the best port in all of Batanes. |
