Demographic Characteristics of Mahatao
The Barangays -

Panatayan has the highest population of any barangay with nearly one out of three Isancarlos or 29% of the population living in the municipal district. The poblacion of Uvoy is the smallest barangay of the municipality with 21% of the population.

Median Age -

  In 1995, the median age in Mahatao was 24.5 years. Because of a higher life expectancy, the median age of Mahatao women was greater than that of Mahatao men by 0.6 years, 24.8 years and 24.2 years, respectively.
Age Structure -

While the median age shows the aging of the population, a more detailed picture may be obtained by looking at age groups. A useful breakdown distinguishes between persons aged under 15 (children), those 15-64 (working age population) and those 65 and over (elderly).

In 1995, children accounted for 35.4% of the total population of Mahatao compared to 37.8 for Batanes. Working age population accounted for 54.3% while the proportion of persons aged 65 and over was 10.3%.

A greater proportion of women than of men were aged 65 and over, 10.9% and 9.7%, respectively. The major difference between the figures for men and women in this age group was primarily because of higher male mortality.

Dependency Ratio -


The various dependency ratios (for children, for the aged, and the total ratio) also serve as useful indicators since they provide information on the economic burden that is borne by the adult population.

Mahatao's total dependency ratio (ratio of the sum of those aged 0-14 and those 65 and over to those 15-64) was 84.1% in 1995. A breakdown of the total dependency ratio shows that the child dependency ratio was 65.2% and the elderly was 18.9%.

Sex Ratio -

In 1995, Mahatao's sex ratio (number of males per 100 females) was 101.3% compared to 102.6 for Batanes. On the masculinity ratio of the elderly, Mahatao has 90.3% compared to 79% for Batanes.

Marital Status -


In 1995, the proportion of single people was 45.9% of the population. The percentage of married people and widowed persons was 47.1% and 6%, respectively. As of the 1995 Census, there were no   separated/divorced people in Mahatao.
Educational attainment -

In 1995, 37.1 per cent of Mahatao's household population aged 5 and over attended or completed elementary education. On the other hand, 30.5 per cent had reached or completed high school while 22.2 per cent had attended or graduated from university or other post-secondary institutions.

Of the post-secondary graduates, 111 were university graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher. These university graduates represented 8.2 per cent of the population aged 5 and over. Of these, post-graduates accounted for 1.8 per cent.
The other municipalities:

The proportion of the population who attended or completed elementary education was highest in Sabtang (45.9%) and the lowest in Basco (30.8%), while the proportion of those who reached or completed high school was highest in Itbayat (36%) and lowest in Basco (26.1%).

In contrast, the proportion for those who attended or completed post-secondary education was highest in Basco (34.5%) and the lowest in Itbayat (12.4%).

                           

The proportion of bachelor's degree holders or higher was highest in Basco (14.1%) and the lowest in Itbayat (4.5%). In the other muncipalities, the proportion was 10.8% in Ivana, 10.7% in Uyugan, 8.1% in Mahatao and 5.5% in Sabtang.

                                       

In Sabtang, post-graduates represented 2.7% of the population aged 5 and over, the highest of any municipality. Elsewhere, the proportion ranges from 2.1% in Ivana to 0.3% in Itbayat.

The Population -

According to the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, the population of Mahatao was 1,895 on May 1, 2000, up 339 from the 1995 Census, representing an average annual growth of 4%. This compares to a negative a growth of 2% between 1990 and 1995.
