Demographic Characteristics of Sabtang
The Barangays -

Nearly one in two Isabtangs or 48% of the population live in the town proper that comprises the barangays of Malakdang and Sinakan. Nakanmuan with a population of 126 is the smallest barangay in all of Batanes. Imnajbu, Batanes with a population of 130 was the second lowest.

Median Age -

A way to measure the aging of a population is the median age, the age at which half of the population is younger and half is older.

In 1995, the median age in Sabtang
was 21.8 years. Because of a higher life expectancy, the median age of Sabtang women was greater than that of Sabtang men by 2.6 years, 23.3 years and 20.7 years, respectively.

Age Structure -

While the median age shows the aging of the population, a more detailed picture may be obtained by looking at age groups. A useful breakdown distinguishes between persons aged under 15 (children), those 15-64 (working age population) and those 65 and over (elderly).
In 1995, children accounted for 36.5% of the total population of Sabtang compared to 37.8 for Batanes. Working age population accounted for 54.5% while the proportion of persons aged 65 and over was 9%.

A greater proportion of women than of men were aged 65 and over, 11.3% and 6.8%, respectively. The major difference between the figures for men and women in this age group was primarily because of higher male mortality.

Dependency Ratio -

The various dependency ratios (for children, for the aged and the total ratio) also serve as useful indicators
