UYUGAN, Batanes - Cheryl Caballero donated the desktop she used during her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto to the Uyugan Elementary School (UES). Some of the most basic programs in any desktop that are needed for the home, the school and the office environment are in it: wordprocessing, spreadsheet and slideshow (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), and hopefully the school kids will gain knowledge from them. Cheryl also downloaded some Christmas songs for the listening pleasure of the school children at Christmastime. Mr. Eric M. Nanud, the UES principal, gracefully accepted Cheryl's humble donation. _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Cheryl graduated valedictorian at St. Anselm's School in Leaside, Ontario (Toronto) Cheryl, like her sister before her, graduated valedictorian at St. Anselm's School in Leaside, Ontario. She finished her undergraduate degree - Honours AB in Political Science (with high distinction) at the University of Toronto. After U of T and a well-deserved one-year break from academic studies, she'll be attending graduate school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia this fall. Cheryl loves books and she'll be pursuing a Master's degree in Library and Information Studies. It's not just the schools, but offices also need equipment The donation is just one instance of the many by Ivatans and various Ivatan organizations in the Philippines and overseas to the schools of Batanes. It's hoped the Ivatans wherever they are will continue to support even in a small way the educational needs of Batanes, formal or informal. May the many among us who have computers that's no longer needed and taking space around the house will respond to the need of schools in Batanes who still don't have computers. It's not just the schools of Batanes, but goverment offices also need equipment.
The plan was to donate it to any school in Uyugan (i.e Imnajbu, Itbud or Centro), but preferably in a school with an Internet connection for maximum benefit to the school children. It was learned, however, that even at Uyugan Centro there's no Internet connection due to the high Internet subscription (5,000 pesos a month). Nevertheless, it's hoped that the school children will benefit from it even without the Internet.

In one particular office that we visited for some official business, they don't have any equipment, not even a typewriter. So this official started to write down our requirements. In another office, they have all these records and files which could easily be handled by a basic computer program for fast and efficient operations. Computerization doesn't necessarily mean complexity or sophisticated programs. - Vbyssey, May '07
