| UYUGAN, Batanes - It's not very often that "Zero" stands for something that we all must be proud of, but that's our province's score as it tops the country with no family classified as poor (0% poverty incidence) in 2006, in a press release issued March 5, 2008 by the NSCB (National Statistical Coordination Board) Secretary General (Dr. Romulo A. Virola). Poverty incidence in Batanes according to the 2006 Official Poverty Statistics, was "Giro" per cent, an improvement from 6.3 per cent in 2003 when the province ranked second to the province of Rizal, and from 10.4 per cent (one in ten Ivatan families were poor) in 2000 when it ranked sixth (behind, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Bataan and Cavite). What an achievement by and for the province in a span of 6 years, certainly in large measure to the work ethic and productivity of the Ivatans and also to the political where-with-all of their leaders. All Ivatans, whether by blood or by birth, wherever they are (residents or non-residents), must be very proud and pleased - and most likely - wearing the widest of grin (Be Happy)! - Vbyssey, March 2008 ______________________________ Top ten least poor provinces/areas are in Luzon The nine least poor provinces in 2000 continued to be so in 2003 and 2006. New entrant in 2006 is Quirino. ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ Poverty worsens (nationwide) between 2003 and 2006 Nationwide, poverty incidence increased to 26.9% for families in 2006 compared to 24.4% in 2003. This is however lower than the 27.5 % poverty incidence in 2000. ______________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________ _______________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________ In terms of poverty incidence among population, a third or 33 in 100 Filipinos were poor in 2006, compared to 30 in 2003. Filipino family of five needed PhP 6,274 monthly income in 2006 to stay out of poverty In 2006, a Filipino family comprising of five members needed a monthly income of PhP 4,177 to be able to sustain their family's minimum basic food needs, an increase of 23% from 2003. To be able to provide for both food and nonfood basic requirements, a family of five needed PhP 6,274 monthly income in 2006, an increase of more than 22% from 2003. In the National Capital Region, the annual per capita poverty threshold was estimated to be PhP 20,566 in 2006. Hence, a family with five members needed to earn at least PhP 8,569 monthly in order not to be classified as poor. ______________________________ ______________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ These poverty estimates are part of the latest set of official poverty statistics released by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) based on the final results of the 2006 Family Income and Expenditures Survey (FIES), conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) every three years.
